Mixed Bits

I’m not sure I get this…

Lawrence Lessing dropped his bid for Congress and is pursuing a “Change Congress” movement, which as far as I can tell lacks any definition. He’s a smart guy, but what specifically does he want to change? Don’t get me wrong, I think most of us would like all our legislative bodies to be as clean as possible, etc. But still, what specific changes does Lessing think will bring this about? And how does he hope to accomplish this?

I’ve been taking an interesting class at Harvard this semester about how Congress works (it’s based on the class that freshman congressmen take here) and two points have come through loud and clear:

  1. Congress is structured to favor re-election of incumbents.
  2. He who controls the process/rules controls what gets done.

Because of these two factors changing congress would have little support from GOPs or Dem’s. The only possible way to shake things up would be to form a new and viable party and get a significant number of folks elected. That seems soooo impossible at the national level. So what is Mr. Lessing (and the “movement”) going to do? Looking forward to hearing more.
